City News: More Yeeting

News from the City of Orlando

** January 24, 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week we yeeted pipes, this week we yeeted waste. We have turned into lean-mean yeeting machines.

Electronics, textiles and plastics are the most prolific (if not toxic) pieces of trash we just toss. But last weekend, our community was able to divert more than 10,000 pounds of the stuff (that’s like two rhinos or three and a half Toyota Corollas). That’s 10,000 pounds less of batteries, metals, polyester, beading, plastic grocery bags and more out in the environment. Some of it will be recycled, and some of it will be upcycled, like the plastic bags...those are slated for a special project involving a bench...because who knew plastics could be turned into virtually anything?!

Lake Nona showed up, so who’s ready for the next one in April at Festival Park (https://www.orlando.gov/Events/Electronic-Waste-Textile-Recycling-Event-Festival-Park-2025?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=1b6983a9bc-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-1b6983a9bc-80648119&mc_cid=1b6983a9bc&mc_eid=UNIQID) ?

** The Orlando Wetlands Festival – a local hidden gem
------------------------------------------------------------

The Orlando Wetlands is a man-made wetland designed to provide advanced treatment for reclaimed water from the City of Orlando and other local cities, but the 1650 acres is also a beautiful nature area with trails and a boardwalk.

The annual festival, on Saturday, February 22, will hold exhibitions, guided tours, kid activities, guided hikes and more! Come and learn about how through the wetlands the city’s Water Reclamation team is taking care of our water and the environment.

** Temporary warming centers
------------------------------------------------------------

With cold weather advisories across the board, and wind chill predictions of 28 degrees in Orlando, Orange County and the Homeless Services Network have opened temporary warming centers for Friday night. They will welcome residents and people without stable housing to two area Warming Centers.

You can get locations, times and list of items to bring on the Orange County website (https://newsroom.ocfl.net/media-advisories/press-releases/2025/01/orange-county-governments-temporary-warming-centers-to-open-thursday-and-friday-evenings/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=1b6983a9bc-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-1b6983a9bc-80648119&mc_cid=1b6983a9bc&mc_eid=UNIQID) .

** A play date for both mommy and baby
------------------------------------------------------------

Have you wished for a place that catered to both you and your kid? Where your baby could enjoy the enrichment of play time, while you sip on a hand-crafted latte, enjoy some unique local grub, and maybe even get some work done in a true café vibe setting. Look no further than The Burrow Café & Play, owned by mommas and sisters-in-law Morgan Claytor and Jovana Bratonozic.

The Burrow Café & Play is a one-of-a-kind space featuring a safe and supervised play space for kids up to eight years old, a lounge and a party room available to book for special occasions. As moms, Morgan and Jovana juggled the ongoing dilemma parents face everyday – keeping their kids entertained (and tiring them out) and finding time to themselves to work, catch up with a friend or just enjoy a quality cup of coffee in a quiet space. Jovana was first inspired to open this kid-adult centric space after visiting the west coast in 2023 where she found the business model to be quite common.

Morgan and Jovana designed The Burrow so the play area is a separate enclosed area with high visibility from the lounge area, ensuring parents can enjoy the café environment while being able to keep an eye on their kids. The duo opened The Burrow earlier this month and are proud to say to all the parents out there, “this space is really for us.” The Burrow Café & Play is located 618 North Mills Avenue, but we recommend visiting their website at theburrowcafeandplay.com (https://www.theburrowcafeandplay.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=1b6983a9bc-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-1b6983a9bc-80648119&mc_cid=1b6983a9bc&mc_eid=UNIQID) for more information on reservations and important know before you go tips.
