City News: We Built This City

News from the City of Orlando

** January 31, 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

While rock and roll may not be what we built it on (you might make a better argument for 90s boy bands...), this city is built on the strength of our community, partnerships and programs that embody resilience and love.

We hold each other up, through funding and initiatives that pay humanity forward to those who need it most. Whether it’s teaching children the love of reading, caring for our senior neighbors or coming to the aid of those in mental crisis, we support you and you support each other. This is our circle of life.

Orlando is strong, because the people of The City Beautiful are strong. Orlando is strong, because we built this city together.

** This is how we invest in our community
------------------------------------------------------------

We’re proud to invest $3 million to 56 organizations that support, value and uplift our residents. Our 2025 Community Investment Program grantees solve community problems which include, but are not limited to:
* Helping furnish homes for people transitioning from homelessness into permanent supportive housing
* Providing a safe haven for families escaping domestic violence and
* Offering job training that empowers parents to increase their income and benefits

With this increased investment, we will be able to help more than 700,000 people in our region so they receive much-needed supportive services.

** The fridge that keeps on giving
------------------------------------------------------------

This week, we joined Seniors First to help pack their new refrigerator/freezer with food that will support many seniors in our community. This new refrigerator will help to expand Seniors First services, reduce food waste and provide even more healthy options for seniors through their Food Bank and Meals on Wheels programs.

The new refrigerator/freezer represents a critical investment in Seniors First's mission to fight hunger and improve food security for seniors in Orlando. The City of Orlando was proud to secure federal funding to help Seniors First add this new amenity that will impact older residents in our community.

** Supporting Orlando's children together
------------------------------------------------------------

Through our children’s zones in Parramore, Holden Heights, Engelwood and Mercy Drive, we’re providing young residents with access to opportunities that help them thrive. We’re fortunate to partner with some wonderful non-profit groups that assist us in our efforts to offer academic support, mentoring and health and wellness programs to children in those neighborhoods.

This week, City Council approved more than $1.1 million in funding agreements that will help Early Learning Coalition of Orange County, Community Coordinated Care for Children, Inc., New Image Youth Center, Inc and Page 15, who continue to positively impact Orlando’s children.

** We’re busy reading
------------------------------------------------------------

Mayor Dyer joined children at the Wadeview Neighborhood Center for Buddy's Book Club. As a part of Literacy Week, Mayor Dyer read from the current book club book "Future Hero.” After reading a couple chapters together, the kids talked with Mayor about their favorite books and what a day looks like to be Mayor of Orlando.

Additionally, Mayor Dyer got to chat with Blakely Wiesenfeld who has been a part of the program for three years. Blakely is currently in 5th grade and loves reading to learn more and feel like she is in another place in the book. In her conversation about books with Mayor, they realized they both read and enjoyed "A Land Remembered" by Patrick Smith, a book about historical Florida.

** Resilience Education Advocacy Center for Hazard Preparedness (REACH)
------------------------------------------------------------

We’ve launched our new mobile resilience hub, REACH Hub, a game-changer in how we support our community before, during and after extreme weather events.

In partnership with UCF, the National Science Foundation and Metrolab, the REACH Hub will be used throughout the year as a portable education stand to promote resilience topics such as healthy food and the city's free tree programs to mitigate extreme heat.

It also offers a mobile solution to helping residents recover after a major weather event. The portable trailer can be delivered to a community in need to provide off-grid solar power for residents to charge cell phones, access free public Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and more.

Resources like the REACH Hub, help us build upon the city’s ongoing resiliency efforts at our neighborhood centers, including our Tables of Connection, to help educate, support and provide critical services and resources to our residents with the greatest need.

** Healthy inside and out
------------------------------------------------------------

If one of your new year’s goals is to invest more time to your overall health and well-being, Boutiq Medical Clinic, owned by Karen Buckalew, APRN-C, is one of our city’s one-stop-shops for addressing your general health concerns, creating long-term wellness plans or enjoying a little self-care.

With 30 years of healthcare experience, Karen’s healthcare career was sparked by the unfortunate loss of her father at a young age to heart disease. Caring for others with heart disease became deeply personal for Karen, leading her to spend many years as a cardiac progressive care nurse. She then went on to get her master’s degree from Florida State University and become a board-certified nurse practitioner. To diversify her clinical and patient care experiences, Karen worked in internal medicine, family practice, urgent care, aesthetics and aesthetic training.

With her combined knowledge and decades of experience, Karen set out to open a clinic that focused on treating each patient holistically, working with each individual to identify health or wellness goals. Since opening five years ago, Karen has curated a team of experts with services that range from offering appointments for common ailments, getting your yearly flu shot, weight loss, vitamin injections and IV drips, aesthetic services, laser treatments, facial rejuvenation, body contouring, microneedling and more. To visit Boutiq Medical Clinic, head to 817 Virginia Drive or learn more at boutiqclinic.com (https://boutiqclinic.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=0c3a673b96-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-0c3a673b96-80648119&mc_cid=0c3a673b96&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
