** Our art world is abuzz

This week Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer joined with art and nonprofit partners from around our community to celebrate the selection of the local artists who are bringing a unique social impact initiative to life.

The City of Orlando received a grant through the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, which brings together mayors, residents, and artists to develop innovative, temporary public art projects that address important civic issues in their communities.

The city’s project - Art Pollination: Building Food Justice through Creativity – will leverage temporary art installations to raise awareness and promote solutions around the shared challenge of food insecurity and hunger in our community. Additionally, the artists participating in Art Pollination will lend their creative skills to create art installations that bring attention to the work our nonprofit partners are doing to help solve hunger-related challenges in Orlando.

** A little bit of history
------------------------------------------------------------

The District GastroBar, established in June 2019, is rooted in the rich history of Parramore during the mid-20th century.

Owner KC Preston, a retired member of the Orlando Fire Department, envisioned the restoration of the property at 534 West Church Street as an immersive experience, where visitors would walk in and feel as if they had taken a step back in time and vibrant cultural and economic legacy of Parramore's Black community.

Its design, a nod to Parramore's storied past, incorporates elements of the South Street Casino and Wells'Built Hotel, venues that hosted musical icons like Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, and B.B. King. Complementing the atmosphere, the menu features traditional Southern and Cajun dishes, carefully curated by KC and the culinary team. Ultimately, The District GastroBar stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy and contributions of the Black and African American community throughout Orlando's 150-year history.
