News and Events from the City of Orlando
News from the City of Orlando
** September 13, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
This week, we honored many people who sacrificed their lives for the good of the many. May we never forget them and the path of freedom they opened before us.

** Remembering September 11, 2001
------------------------------------------------------------
The lives of many first responders were taken on September 11, 2001, after they raced into chaos to courageously rescue others. Even more have lost their lives since then due to 9/11-related illnesses.
This week, the Orlando Fire and Police Departments hosted events to help our city honor those heroes. Recognizing them and reflecting on the day is a reminder that our community is fortunate to have first responders who are willing to risk their own safety to protect us all each and every day.
POW MIA Recognition Ceremony
** An annual tribute
------------------------------------------------------------
Today, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council also paid tribute to our nation's heroes by honoring the service and sacrifice of United States military prisoners of war and those still missing in action as part of national POW-MIA Day. The annual 2024 POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony is a tribute and reaffirmation of the city’s commitment to bringing our heroes home and ensuring that they are never forgotten.
Hosted by WKMG News 6, Trooper Steve, this year's event included special guest speaker, Keith Maupin, father of Matt Maupin, the first American soldier to be declared missing in action in the Iraq War.
Buddy Dyer and Omari Jones
** Celebrating Orlando's Olympic Medalist
------------------------------------------------------------
This summer, Valencia College student Omari Jones inspired our country and community at the Olympics. By winning bronze, he became the only U.S. boxer to win a medal in Paris. To recognize his impressive accomplishment, Mayor Dyer presented Omari with something unique: the first "Glove to the City."
Omari has been incredibly active and engaged in our community, despite his young age. As a student at Edgewater High School, he was recognized as an Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commission Youth Humanitarian for his leadership and advocacy, which included mentoring elementary school children.
Our community is proud of his success and thankful for his involvement. We can’t wait to see Omari’s impact in the future, both in the ring and throughout Orlando.

** Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off
------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz invite residents to join them in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, 2024.
This year, the Hispanic Heritage Month national theme is "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” which encapsulates the spirit of innovation, resilience and unity that define the Hispanic experience.
In special celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and the important role art plays within the Hispanic culture, the City of Orlando will host an art exhibition celebrating Hispanic pioneers, both locally and nationally, who have inspired new generations and demonstrate the spirit of innovation, resilience and unity that defines the Hispanic experience. The art exhibition will run from September 17 - November 3, 2024, at the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall.
In addition to the Terrace Gallery Art Exhibition, Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz will host the City of Orlando’s Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Event on October 3, 2024, at the Orlando Museum of Art. This community-wide event will feature Latin food, music and entertainment.

** We love an anniversary
------------------------------------------------------------
As a city that’s known for being a launchpad for so many successful small businesses and entrepreneurs, it’s always a joy when we can celebrate a milestone anniversary for one of those businesses. Join us in a round of applause for The Nickley Group Home Advisors on 10 years in business!
The Nickley Group Home Advisors was launched in 2014 by Tom Nickley, with five employees cozied up together in an eight-by-eight office space. But, before Tom took up the fast-paced and ever-changing trends in real estate, he spent ten years selling wine. Tom served as the National Sales and Marketing Manager for a boutique wine broker selling to customers around the globe, becoming well-rounded in the importance of marketing, team building, and implementing systems and processes that make a company successful.
Ten years later, Tom, joined by his wife Alexis, now have a team of 45 agents, a full-service administrative team, and are known as one of central Florida’s top real estate companies. Rather than focusing on success first, the most important lesson Tom, Alexis and their team have learned is to focus on adding value and creating positive environments for clients, colleagues and teammates. With a healthy work culture, they believe success is the byproduct of doing the right thing.
