------------------------------------------------------------

407 is more than just an area code – it's a vibe. It represents the unique and diverse community that lives within its bounds. The 407 is home to more than 300,000 people who live, work and play all day in the City Beautiful. From farming citrus 150 years ago to now building the next generation of AI and simulation tech, we’re always proud to celebrate all things local.

On 407 Day, this Monday, let’s all do what we do best and celebrate the places that make us 407 proud. Check out a local park (https://www.orlando.gov/Parks-the-Environment/Directory?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=4e846fdd61-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-4e846fdd61-80648119&mc_cid=4e846fdd61&mc_eid=UNIQID) , see the sights at Harry P. Leu Gardens (https://www.leugardens.org/Home?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=4e846fdd61-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-4e846fdd61-80648119&mc_cid=4e846fdd61&mc_eid=UNIQID) , have a meal at one of our many Michelin-recognized restaurants, or bike down on the trails (https://www.orlando.gov/Parking-Transportation/Bike-Trails-and-Paths?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=4e846fdd61-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-4e846fdd61-80648119&mc_cid=4e846fdd61&mc_eid=UNIQID) to experience new parts of the city. ** The Orlandoans who bring good into the world
------------------------------------------------------------

AmeriCorps members are here to not only help our city but also help us fill important roles within the community.

Meet Mikayla Allen, a local Orlando resident who came back to her hometown after getting her degree in Elementary Education. Seeking classroom experience before teaching, she joined AmeriCorps and quickly built strong teacher and staff relationships. Her work directly contributes to student success, including credit recovery, GPA improvement, and graduation. Notably, she guided a Jones High School junior, who was significantly behind, to graduation readiness. Mikayla helped this student complete all her courses and she is on her way to graduation!

City of Orlando AmeriCorp members have helped 884 high school seniors graduate high school with a career, college or military service plan.

Mikayla's experience with Americorp has solidified her desire to pursue a career in education with OCPS or a similar student-focused organization.

** Life in Orlando told in iambic pentameter
------------------------------------------------------------

Calling all poets! We’re partnering with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority to announce the "Words & Wonders - Slice of Life in Central Florida" Poetry Contest! Inspired by the anthropological work of Zora Neale Hurston, let's create poems that highlight often hidden gems around southern Central Florida life. We want you to capture the sights, sounds, smells and energy of our beautiful region in verse. Winning poems will be showcased at Orlando International Airport this summer. Submit your original work by June 1, 2025.

** Spilling the boba tea
------------------------------------------------------------

Need an excuse to go enjoy one of your favorite treats? Consider celebrating 407 Day as your reason to treat yourself to something delicious. If Boba is your treat of choice, then we’d like to introduce you to GOTCHA, one of the newer Boba shops to join our city’s diverse and thriving Asian-inspired drink scene.

GOTCHA is located in Curry Ford West and owned by Yuju “Nicole” Lai and her father Wulone Lai. Nicole, Wulone and the rest of their family grew up in Taiwan, where Boba originated. In Taiwan, Boba is synonymous with comfortable and companionable gatherings. After the family relocated to Orlando, Nicole went to college to study psychology. One day, while taking a walk with her mom, Nicole mused about one day opening their own Boba shop and then thought, “Why not now? I’m young, and if this business doesn’t work out, I will be able to find another job knowing I embarked on a journey that left me with the unforgettable experience of opening and operating my own business.”

After graduating college, Nicole, with help from Wulone, got to work learning the Orlando market, how to manage costs and effectively meeting the needs of customers. They chose Curry Ford West based on the area’s family-oriented environment and support for small businesses. GOTCHA has been open now for a little more than a year and invites Boba aficionados and newbies alike to come enjoy their cozy space and a bright and refreshing drink. GOTCHA is located at 4438 Curry Ford Road, Suite A, and you can view their Instagram here (https://www.instagram.com/gotcha_kecha?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=4e846fdd61-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-4e846fdd61-80648119&mc_cid=4e846fdd61&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
