** Milking an innovative trend ------------------------------------------------------------
The city’s zoning, land development codes and Growth Management Plan may not be top of mind, but you’ve probably noticed the “cool” and innovative new places and projects that have popped up around town as a result.
This includes the newly opened Milk Stacks apartments, developed by Atrium Management Company in the heart of one of our city’s most frequented Main Street districts – The Milk District. As the district has continued to develop into a hub for arts, dining and entertainment, so has the desire for residents to live in this area. Increasing and diversifying Orlando’s housing stock continues to be one of our city’s main priorities, which includes expanding housing opportunities in these popular business districts.
As of last week, Milk Stacks is our city’s newest example of how forward thinking and development-friendly zoning regulations and land development codes allow for innovative adaptive reuse of underused properties. Since adopting our city’s first Growth Management Plan in 1991, the City Planning Division has continuously updated it to account for development trends and the needs and desires of the community, creating unique housing options for our residents.
** Blending small biz with a healthy mindset ------------------------------------------------------------
One of our city’s small business owners’ most admirable qualities is their commitment to listening and observing so they can fill a need and tailor their services directly to their customers.
One small biz duo has taken their customer service to the next level is Leyla Colon and Jorge A. Perez, the new owners of The Smoothie Room in the SoDo District. Leyla and Jorge took over ownership in January 2024, expanding the menu to create smoothies that cater to customers with different health goals, including fitness, heart health, diabetic-friendly and hormone balancing. In February of this year, Leyla and Jorge took their commitment to health inclusivity one step further and partnered with Orlando Health on the hospital’s new Neuro-Friendly Restaurant Initiative (https://www.orlandohealth.com/services-and-specialties/advanced-rehab-institute/patients-and-families/community-initiatives/neuro-friendly-restaurant-initiative?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=41aed27c1f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-41aed27c1f-80648119&mc_cid=41aed27c1f&mc_eid=UNIQID) , becoming the first restaurant in the city to do so.
This initiative aims to better serve customers with “invisible injuries,” including those who have experienced a stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors and progressive disorders like Parkinson’s disease. When visiting The Smoothie Room, you’ll notice the incorporation of pictorial menu books and assistive utensils. Leyla, Jorge and their staff have also all received training on how to best serve customers with these conditions.
For Leyla and Jorge, this is just the first step of many to serving individuals with any condition. The incorporation of neuro-friendly service has inspired them to pursue tools for the blind, deaf and others, creating an environment that is welcoming and comfortable for all. ** Milking an innovative trend
------------------------------------------------------------
The city’s zoning, land development codes and Growth Management Plan may not be top of mind, but you’ve probably noticed the “cool” and innovative new places and projects that have popped up around town as a result.
** Blending small biz with a healthy mindset
------------------------------------------------------------
One of our city’s small business owners’ most admirable qualities is their commitment to listening and observing so they can fill a need and tailor their services directly to their customers.
