** March 28, 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

Alone, you can survive. But what does it take to go beyond that? To actually thrive? That takes a community. It takes investment in each other.

That is why we invest in and offer programs and initiatives that help the community and those in need – whether just for the moment or throughout their life. We’re in this together for the long haul.

** Deepening the roots of community service
------------------------------------------------------------

Since its formation in 2008, IDignity has helped thousands of people in our community – including people experiencing homelessness – obtain needed identification to access housing, employment, bank accounts and social services. Their major impact on our most vulnerable residents is why we have partnered with them for so many years through our Community Investment Program.

During this period, the nonprofit organization has been without a physical address, moving from location to location around the area, until now. Ground has been broken on IDignity’s permanent operational headquarters just south of downtown Orlando. The location on Atlanta Avenue will include 12,000-square feet of office space and 5,000-square feet of client event space.

The permanent location will allow IDignity to serve more people, helping them access valid form of identification that can help them move forward with their lives.

** Thinking outside the box. Or should we say bus?
------------------------------------------------------------

Earlier this week, City Council approved the 407 Connect bus program, bringing an innovative approach to supporting our unsheltered community. Launching this summer, the program will introduce two state-of-the-art buses that provide overnight accommodations for nearly 40 individuals each night.

With homelessness on the rise—Orange County saw a 24% increase in unsheltered individuals in 2024—this initiative is a critical part of our multi-faceted approach to reducing homelessness in Orlando by 50% over the next three years.

In partnership with the Christian Service Center (CSC), we are investing in solutions that make a real impact. As part of the 407 Connect program, individuals, predetermined by the CSC case management team, will not only have a clean and safe space to sleep each night, but will also have access to services that will connect them with permanent housing. Through this model, we expect to connect more than 400 individuals to permanent housing over the next three years. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to launch 407 Connect this summer.

** Leaders who changed Orlando’s History
------------------------------------------------------------

Recognizing the City of Orlando’s 150th anniversary this year gives us the opportunity to also celebrate individuals who’ve helped strengthen our city over the years. This includes community service trailblazers like Commissioner Mable Butler and Mayor Glenda Hood, who were both honored at the Orange County Regional History Center’s Women’s History Breakfast today.

Commissioner Butler, who will turn 98 later this spring, is a beloved civil rights leader who worked to ensure a more inclusive community for all. She was the first Black woman elected to the Orlando City Council, serving as District 6 City Commissioner from 1984-90. Later, she was the first Black elected official to serve on the Orange County Commission. Commissioner Butler is still active and engaged, including volunteering her time to serve residents at our L. Claudia Allen Senior Center.

In 1992, Mayor Hood became the first female mayor of Orlando. During her time at City Hall, she advocated for smart growth to build safe neighborhoods and add more parks to the city. One of Mayor Hood’s biggest undertakings was the redevelopment of the Naval Training Center and the creation of Baldwin Park. She served for three terms before becoming Florida’s Secretary of State. Mayor Hood also remains active in the community, including serving on the Orlando Land Trust Board, where she advocates for improving and protecting parks, playgrounds and green spaces for all residents.

** The scent of a small business is alluring
------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t you love when you smell something so incredible all your thoughts are abandoned and all you want to know is what the amazing scent is?

Sibling duo, Heather Boadella and Sean Kowalski, the owners of Artifact Candle Foundry, wanted to give customers the opportunity to create their own fragrance combinations that would stop someone in their tracks. Heather, a former real-estate attorney, and Sean, with a background in health care sales, pivoted into homemade candle making by chance when Heather enjoyed a similar concept while on vacation. She spent years telling herself if she found something she was passionate enough about to launch a small business, she would do it. And so, the idea for Artifact Candle Foundry was born.

As downtown residents, the siblings agreed Thornton Park District felt like an ideal location for the concept. In 2019, Heather and Sean opened Artifact Candle Foundry, which invites customers to come in, choose their scents, and sit down at the counter to hand-pour their custom candle with assistance from staff.

To create your custom-scented candle that speaks to your senses, head to 2 North Summerlin Avenue or watch this Instagram Reel (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DG1JC1AuBOv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=bb72f8feae-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-bb72f8feae-80648119&mc_cid=bb72f8feae&mc_eid=UNIQID) to see more.
