City News: A Local Government Type of Party

News from the City of Orlando

** May 30, 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Franklin once said nothing was certain, except death and taxes. We think he definitely could have added local municipality ribbon cuttings to that list.

Being able to celebrate the wins, even the smallest ones, is so very important in this day and age. While last week we cheered on approved contracts and the beginnings of new projects, this week we’re highlighting the moments of completed projects.

While ribbon cuttings themselves may not seem important to someone not close to the project, these little celebrations represent all the hard work that went into creating something for our residents and visitors.

** The South Street Urban Farm has expanded!
------------------------------------------------------------

This quarter-acre green space provides West Orlando residents with quick, convenient access to fresh produce.

The revitalized South Street Urban Farm in Parramore is designed to help residents grow produce right in their neighborhood. The expansion features technology from Block n' Lock, a homegrown Orlando company. We're one of their first clients, incorporating their innovative block system into a new garden structure. This collaboration not only supports a local business but also reinforces our dedication to sustainable, resilient food systems.

We're committed to increasing access to fresh, locally grown produce for all residents, and our urban farms play an important role in that mission.

** One phase closer to an improved I-Drive
------------------------------------------------------------

We recently celebrated the completion of phase 1 of the Grand National Drive improvements along the International Drive corridor near Fun Spot.

This project is helping to transform one of Orlando's busiest tourism corridors, and get us closer to our Vision Zero goal, by providing increased roadway capacity for smoother traffic flow and introducing brand-new multi-use paths that offer safer and easier ways for pedestrians and cyclists to get around.

This project is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance International Drive through strategic investments that will increase tourism, drive economic growth and create new jobs.

** From a blighted hotel to an affordable apartment complex
------------------------------------------------------------

The second phase of Palm Gardens Orlando Apartments on West Colonial Drive is officially complete. Through our Accelerate Orlando initiative, we invested more than $4 million to support One Stop Housing in transforming a former hotel into 150 much-needed apartment homes.

The completion of Phase 2 means new beginnings for individuals like Tanushree Bhowmik and Olme Pineda. Since moving in last month, Tanushree has been able to shift her focus back to her goals: graduating nursing school next year and eventually owning a home of her own. And Olme, a longtime Central Florida resident, has been able to regain his independence and a home for his son after facing health challenges.

Building on the success of the first phase, Palm Gardens will offer 30 years of affordability. This ensures long-term access to safe and affordable housing for our community, including units that are reserved for permanent supportive housing. Interested residents should call 689.312.6270 or visit onestophousing.com/apply-online to apply.

** More to celebrate
------------------------------------------------------------

We're wrapping up a fantastic year with our Orlando Kidz Zones!

This year, we’re celebrating the accomplishments of 66 graduating seniors (17 of whom also work within our zones) from across all Orlando Kidz Zones. Their hard work and dedication are truly inspiring!

Also, thanks to the generous support of the Orlando Community and Youth Trust and dedicated partners, deserving students from our Kidz Zones have received scholarships to pursue their post-secondary dreams.

What started in Parramore in 2006 with the Parramore Kidz Zone, has expanded across Parramore, Holden Heights, Engelwood and Mercy Drive, benefiting local Orlando students with cradle-to-career support. Join us in celebrating the continued success and brighter futures for Orlando's youth.

** How Orlandoans learned what a sub was
------------------------------------------------------------

When Paul Gabriel opened Gabriel’s Submarine Shop in Orlando in 1958, there was one problem. Paul and wife Doris relocated from New Jersey, where a “submarine” was synonymous with a hearty sandwich. But here in Florida, customers saw the word and assumed they were selling nautical supplies. Imagine the double take that happened when they smelled fresh bread and sliced meats. To familiarize locals with a “sub,” Paul met with the Orlando Sentinel to discuss advertising opportunities and wasn’t given much hope on this novel sandwich idea. After six months of low sales, Paul was ready to close shop and move back north. He said he would finish out the weekend and then close it down. But that weekend, Gabriel’s had influx of customers, and the sub shop stayed open.

Paul passed in 2013, leaving Gabriel’s Submarine Shop to his son Kevin, Kevin’s wife Delaine, and their son, Kyle. Kevin grew up in the business, with his bed literally situated on top of the 18-foot freezer. His son Kyle, while not sleeping on top of the freezer, followed in Kevin’s footsteps and intends to keep Gabriel’s going for as long as possible. So, do we have the Gabriel family to thank for Orlando’s love of a good sub? We’re going with yes.

To visit Gabriel’s Submarine Shop, head to 3006 Edgewater Drive, or learn more at gabrielssubshop.com (https://www.gabrielssubshop.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=f252fa23c1-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-f252fa23c1-80648119&mc_cid=f252fa23c1&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
