City News: Building a Better Orlando

News from the City of Orlando

** January 17, 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

For anyone who might be curious, Chuck Norris was born on March 10, 1940, that was 84 years ago. Want to know what has been around longer than Chuck Norris? The water, sewer and stormwater pipes under Summerlin Avenue. So, we’re going all Chuck Norris on these 1938 cast iron pipes and yeeting them out of the ground.

This is one of many important infrastructure updates needed in the city, such as the work on Robinson Street and in Ivanhoe Village, that are the foundation of Building a Better Orlando. The area of Summerlin between South Street and Marks Street has seen water main breaks, flooding, uneven roads and more. To fix these issues and not just put on a band-aid, we're partnering with OUC to make the area’s infrastructure safer and more resilient – all in one go.

The deets on the yeets
* The Summerlin Improvement Project Phase 1 will take 3 years

* Road closures and work will be done in sections – the whole of Summerlin Avenue will NOT be closed for 3 years

* First section is the intersection of Summerlin Avenue and Robinson Street – this closure will last 90 days

We’re open for business
* All the businesses are OPEN, so are their parking lots

* While you may see “Road Closed” or “No thru traffic” signs in the area, don’t fret – it just means you can’t use the actual intersection where the road is dug up

* Go visit a Thornton Park District business and tell them Chuck sent you

The prize at the end of the project:
* Reliable water, sewer and storm drain systems

* New additional fire hydrants

* ADA-compliant crosswalks and signals

* Restored brick pavers (less bumps in the road)

* Improved streetscape

** Get comfortable with some comfort food
------------------------------------------------------------

Ten years ago, Chef Greg Richie brought the comforts of the deep south to downtown Orlando with his appropriately named restaurant, Soco Thornton Park. But in this case, the “co” represents both comfort and contemporary cuisine.

Greg Richie himself is the embodiment of “Southern” and “contemporary.” Richie was raised in Texas and Georgia, where comfort foods are at the center of culture and community. By the fifth grade, Richie was in the kitchen helping his mom and grandmother bake bread that he’d bring to school to share with his classmates. By age 13, he had decided his life’s work would be culinary. Richie’s early years as a chef were spent in some of the south’s most beloved restaurants across cities in South Carolina and Georgia, before he had the opportunity to go to Hawaii to train under James Beard Award Winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi.

So how did he end up here, in Orlando? Well, we have Emeril Lagasse himself to thank for that, who hired Richie to be the chef at one of his restaurants at the time. With the opportunity to open his own restaurant in downtown Orlando, Richie was able to transform his years of diverse experience into a menu that perfectly balanced southern comfort foods prepared with the some of the culinary world’s most contemporary and eye-catching techniques. To visit Soco Thornton Park, head to 629 East Central Boulevard, or check out their website at socothorntonpark.com (https://www.socothorntonpark.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=46e53ca6c8-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-46e53ca6c8-80648119&mc_cid=46e53ca6c8&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
