Know your routes, be aware of zones and watch out for bogies. No, we’re not talking about flying in Top Gun, we’re talking about back-to-school traffic in Orlando.
Orange County students head back to class on Monday, which means increased traffic, active school zones, frequent school bus stops and kids walking or biking to school.
While our young Orlando scholars are sharpening their pencils and swapping lunches, we, the adults, are responsible for making sure they get there safely.
So, this Monday, we say this to you: to the teachers, crossing guards and volunteer parents, we salute you; to the kids, stick to the crosswalks; to everyone else, don’t say we didn’t give you a heads up!

Volunteers go above and beyond
Mayor Dyer recently had the opportunity to recognize longtime city volunteer, Dolly Charron. Mayor presented her with her a plaque to celebrate her incredible contributions to Harry P. Leu Gardens, with of more than 500 volunteer hours in the past year alone!
A retired college professor and world traveler, Dolly brings warmth, knowledge and global perspective to every tour she gives at Leu Garden's House Museum.
Her accuracy, passion for history and sunny spirit make every tour both educational and unforgettable.
Thank you, Dolly, for making Orlando a more welcoming and inspiring place, one tour at a time.

📸: The Community Paper
Let’s go out, but stay in
For those seeking a cozy spot to unwind after work or on weekends, a place that feels like home but isn’t, Nora’s Sugar Shack is your spot. If you’ve driven down Virginia Drive, you’ve probably spotted what looks like a house with Nora’s iconic logo and wondered: home or business? Officially, it’s a business. Metaphorically, it’s a home for anyone craving a low-key, intimate atmosphere.
At just 19-years-old, Nora Brooker moved to Orlando and took a job working for an independent beer distribution company. Nora worked her way to becoming a division manager until the company was bought out by a national company and she realized corporate life had her spending more time at a computer and less of what she loved most: curating unique, craft or locally produced beer to share with the community. She left corporate and focused on building her own business.
The result was Nora’s Sugar Shack, a local package store, lounge and unofficial home away from home now celebrating 20 years in business. While the outside of Nora’s is eye-catching, the inside is cozy and full of personal touches and unique décor. Nora is known for her spot-on beer recommendations, warm hugs and her passionate advocacy for dog adoptions.
Nora’s Sugar Shack is one of the more than 60 local restaurants, bars and cafes participating in the Main Streets Sip & Savor Weeks, running now through August 10. To visit Nora and her Sugar Shack, head to 636 Virginia Drive or check out Instagram @norassugarshack (https://www.instagram.com/norassugarshack/?hl=en&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=9de7af8dc7-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-9de7af8dc7-80648119&mc_cid=9de7af8dc7&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
