News from the City of Orlando
** November 22, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
Not only did we celebrate World Toilet Day earlier this week, but we are just days away from the biggest food holiday of the year. What do these two things have in common?
Get your head out of the gutter, well actually, keep the grease and other debris out of the gutters!
This holiday season don’t let grease or other trash wreak havoc on your plumbing system. Used cooking oil and/or flushing anything but the 3 P’s (pee, poop, paper) down the toilet leads to costly clogs and overflows. So, remember, trash goes in the trash can and cooking oil can be recycled!
Collect your used cooking oil in a shatterproof container, no larger than 2 gallons, and bring it to one of the City of Orlando's convenient kiosk locations where it will be recycled and turned into biofuel.
Find your nearest kiosk location at orlando.gov/grease.

** 11 years of perfect scores
------------------------------------------------------------
Over the years, Orlando has been recognized as a community that puts inclusion at the forefront of all that it does.
For the 11th-consecutive year, the City of Orlando has earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index. Shared each fall, the Municipal Equality Index ranks the LGBTQ+ inclusivity of government laws, policies and services of cities across the United States.
The City of Orlando continues to actively partner with organizations that provide essential services and support to our LGBTQ+ community. We collaborate with Zebra Youth to offer housing and support to young LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing homelessness. Additionally, the city supports Orlando United Resiliency Services, based at The Center, to provide mental health services and programs to those affected by the Pulse tragedy or other traumatic experiences. We were also proud to support Come Out With Pride this year during one of their largest events in 20 years.
We're grateful for every person in our community who continues to show the power of love, compassion and unity.

** A healthy swan is a happy swan
------------------------------------------------------------
Last week volunteers, vets and kayakers reunited with Orlando’s beloved feathered friends for our annual Swan Round-Up. Lake Eola’s swans were guided to a safe pen, where they received VIP treatment that included wellness checks, weigh-ins, and a whole lot of love before heading back into the water, healthy and ready to swim.
Want to help our swans thrive? Feed them leafy greens – no bread please! You can also join District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan’s Swan-A-Thon (https://www.orlandotrust.org/Home/Swan-a-Thon?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=c42d5da876-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-c42d5da876-80648119&mc_cid=c42d5da876&mc_eid=UNIQID) to show your support.

** Storm debris pickup continues
------------------------------------------------------------
Our Solid Waste crews and contractors have already collected more than 65 million pounds of storm debris from Hurricane Milton, and they continue to work diligently to remove the remaining material. If you have a pile of debris at the curb and have not yet reported it, please do so on orlando.gov (https://www.orlando.gov/Trash-Recycling/Report-Storm-Debris?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=c42d5da876-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-c42d5da876-80648119&mc_cid=c42d5da876&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
To ensure proper collection, please make sure your debris pile is clear from mailboxes, trees, poles, fire hydrants, and overhead limbs or utilities. Additionally, piles of leaves must be bagged to prevent them from being scattered during collection.
Thank you for your efforts and patience as we restore our neighborhoods.
** A dog bar for a bark-full time
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re not ones to brag or anything, but if you didn’t already know, as of 2024 Orlando was ranked the most dog-friendly city in America. This week, we’re living up to that accolade and welcoming BarkHaven, the city’s newest dog bar that caters equally to our four-legged pals and their human besties.
Barkhaven owners Carolyn and Jacob Kuwick began dating in 2016, and as they progressed in their relationship, began joking about the day they would leave their jobs and open a dog bar. At the time, Carolyn was bartending at the Gaylord Palms steakhouse and working as a Product Specialist for Nissan, and Jacob was working in finance for Verizon, while also managing his own landscaping and lawn business. Two years later, that joke had transformed into a decision. Within days of telling Carolyn he had set his sights on making the dog bar a reality, Jacob received a notice of separation from Verizon; an event Carolyn says was life’s incredible and perfectly timed way of closing the door to one chapter to make room for the next to begin.
When Carolyn and Jacob started their search for a location for their dog bar, they originally envisioned a shipping container concept that served drinks within an enclosed area where the humans and dogs could hang out. After all, the average dog park really didn’t offer much for their owners, and the couple’s goal was to create a space that better catered to the human companions. But fate had bigger plans and connected the couple with many of their now business partners through a variety of avenues that all ultimately lead to rehabilitating the once warehouse space into the full-service dog bar that is now BarkHaven.
As of yesterday, BarkHaven is officially open and ready to welcome dogs and humans to experience their food, drinks, coffee bar, off-leash dog run and even a cozy firepit area to enjoy during our incoming cooler weather months. BarkHaven is located at 724 Brookhaven Drive, but before visiting check out barkhaven.com for more information on how to prepare for you and your pup’s first visit!
