It’s always a great day when a new company launches, especially one that helps create social and environmental change in our community. This week we celebrated Block n' Lock, a company that makes mortar-less interlocking concrete blocks, helping lower construction costs.
This local company, located in the Lorna Doone neighborhood, is also a RALLY alumnus. In partnership with the City of Orlando, RALLY is a social enterprise accelerator, with the goal of assisting entrepreneurs transform their ideas and existing work into sustainable ventures that create positive social change and new job opportunities.
Block n’ Lock hopes to use this new block technology to build low-cost structures and homes in the community. As one of their first clients, we’re excited to incorporate their technology to create a garden structure at one of our urban farms, aligning with our broader goals of sustainability and food resilience.
We can’t wait to see the impact of Block 'n Lock in our community and beyond. Look, we know the “be prepared for hurricanes” messaging is old and tired. However, it will not stop the storms from forming and aiming themselves straight at us. So, maybe just get prepared and then you can ignore us.
Bonus points – until September 6, it’s still a sales tax holiday on needed hurricane/disaster prep supplies. ** Throw them a bone ------------------------------------------------------------
Today’s business is officially giving you permission to “throw some shade” any time you’re under their roof. Why? Because Lamp & Shade Craft Kitchen and Cocktails is paying homage to the building’s original tenant – Lamp Shade Fair, who specialized in, you guessed it, lamps and lamp shades.
Michael D’Esposito, owner of Lamp & Shade Craft Kitchen and Cocktails and CEO of the group that brought us Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery, saw an opportunity to upgrade a familiar former niche Orlando business into a new foodie destination. Michael and his team felt the former Lamp Shade Fair location gave them exactly what they were looking for in their next project, a location that was walkable and popular among residents, offering a high-end dining option and experience. Michael took his tribute to the beloved Mills 50 community one step further by creating a menu that is all Asian-inspired dishes.

** Throw them a bone
------------------------------------------------------------
Today’s business is officially giving you permission to “throw some shade” any time you’re under their roof.
To check out Lamp & Shade Craft Kitchen and Cocktails, head to 1336 North Mills Avenue, or visit their website at throwsomeshadeorl.com (https://throwsomeshadeorl.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=18423023ed-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-18423023ed-80648119&mc_cid=18423023ed&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
